Day 32 - I Adore Theatre

Hello!

Today Josh and I had another busy day exploring the great city of London. We started with a fabulous breakfast and then headed to the Design Museum of London. They were displaying the best designs of 2015 ranging from save-the-world projects to car models to fashion to graphic prints and digital work. It was fantastic! The museum was hosting a people's choice competition among the designs. Each person could vote for their favorite design in the exhibition and the results would be calculated on the wall. Josh and I both fasted our votes for our favorite pieces. "The Ocean Cleanup" (http://www.theoceancleanup.com/about.html) and "Project Daniel" (http://www.notimpossiblenow.com/labs/project-daniel) were currently the top leading designs. Rightfully so. I also really loved the design of a magazine called Riposte (http://www.ripostemagazine.com/) which focuses on women reading a magazine that isn't your typical women magazine. The goal is to bring a more rounded knowledge rather than solely fashion to the female reader. So of course, I bought a copy in the bookshop later. There was also a school designed in Beijing called the Garden School. It's purpose was to bring nature back into a school design to create a healthier environment for youth. The final design that really stood out to me was a kettled called "Miito". It was beautifully designed and created for energy and water saving (http://miito.de/). It's a fabulous design that I would definitely recommend checking out.

The brightly colored bridge

The brightly colored bridge

After seeing the museum, we crossed the London Bridge.  It was much different than I thought it would be. The bridge looked like a circus had painted the edges of it. Bright blues and reds followed the curves of the stone bridge. It was very.... Bright... I enjoyed the architecture of the actual bridge but not a huge fan of the paint. I'm sure there is a very good explanation as to why the bridge is those colors but neither Josh or I found out. Today was the first day it really felt like a London day. It was rainy and grey all day. I'm extremely glad this weather was only with us for today.

We then took a ferry across the river to the Tate Modern Gallery. The gallery is in an old factory that has been remodeled. The outside is very menacing... I would have hated working there back in the day when it was a running factory. The exterior looks like a place that will eat your soul. In contrast, the inside is very modern and open with beautiful art and coffe shops around. We payed to see the special painting exhibition by Agnes Martin. Her work was very airy. You could tell she battled for unreachable perfection in her pieces. Agnes had an amazing amount of work filling the huge exhibition space. It was quite incredible.

Josh and I left the gallery and had a nice Italian dinner before heading to the Royal National Theatre. We had bought tickets to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. I had read the book before but had forgotten most of it. Tickets were only 15 pounds a person! We were very excited to see a play no matter how fancy. I can honestly say it was of equal impressiveness and joy to me as seeing the Lion King on Broadway. It was phenomenal. Josh and I left feeling like we had just seen the most amazing gem of our lives. When the show began, we thought the set looked bland and the characters were just going to do a low budget show. Boy were we wrong. I'm not going to explain it here because I think you should see it for yourself if you have the opportunity with as much amazement and surprise as we did. Phenomenal. The acting was incredible and the set was insanely awesome. Our evening was fabulous.

All the best,

Lilly
