Day 3 - Coins Actually Matter

Hola!

Our second full day in Barcelona was a busy one. We walked 9 miles all over the city. I feel like we are starting to know it much better now. Our neighborhood is called "Born" which has been our favorite part of Barcelona this far! We got lucky with our place! There are many galleries and amazing restaurants surrounding us within 5 minutes of us. Josh and I started our day at a market called Mercat de Santa Caterina which is in a building with the most beautifully tiled roof. The market sold mainly food, a bit of merchandise and had a few restaurants. We walked around for a bit and wished we had a way to cook our own food. The grossest thing we saw was a skinned lamb's head with eyeballs, brains and guts wrapped up and ready to sell.

We then stumbled upon the Barcelona Cathedral. This is a rather difficult building to "stumble" upon as it is MASSIVE. It was gorgeous! The outside opened up onto a plaza with merchants, people and beautiful, live music. It amazes me how much attention to detail is payed throughout Barcelona's architecture. We waited in a long line to go in -- so worth it. The inside was magical. It's one if those places that your breath is completely taken away and you are just thankful there is a bench to sit on so you don't fall over from looking up too much. We stayed there for a least an hour pointing out minute details. It's hard to believe this while church was built for one Saint. The church had a pretty courtyard with live geese in it that made sure you knew they were there. Their quacks were super loud and ugly! I love them. I included a picture but it really doesn't do the cathedral justice.

Josh and I then tried to visit art galleries but they were all closed! On a Saturday! After finding closed door after closed door, we gave it up and went to a large plaza with fountains to sit. We watched children climb sculptures and climb into the fountains for a while. I love kid energy. It's so joyful.

At this point, I was very tired and hungry so we walked home. At 10pm we went to dinner at a place called Mercat Princesa. Our friend Sergi told us about it! It was a delicious tapas place. The best way for me to describe it is a large building with 20 or so different food stands and lots of seats. You walked up to a stand, ordered and payed them usually around 3.75€ for a dish and then would take it back to your seat and eat until you wanted another one. Right around the time we had finished dinner and were getting ready to leave, a homeless lady came up with a sign and started begging for money. Josh gave her a few euros and I told her I didn't have any. As soon as she left our table I knew my phone was gone. We jumped up to follow her but sadly she was gone. This of course didn't surprise me at all but we continued to look for her. Phone stolen day 2. Sad day. On the plus side, I didn't loose too many photos and we were able to disconnect my phone device within an hour. Thank you parents! Josh and I are viewing this as a nice way to be disconnected from our phones on our honeymoon. It's not too bad. :) The funniest part of the whole thing was about an hour after my phone was stolen. Josh turned to me and said, "Today your phone was stolen, which can only lead me to question.... How does James Bond catch all the bad guys?"

My legs hurt today from all the walking, I have minor shin splints, I am slightly uneasy from my phone being pick pocketed and yet, I am still super happy. Traveling is weird.

Love from a phoneless traveler,
